I must admit that traveling alone isn’t my most favorite thing to do. But when it comes between sitting in my less that stellar accommodations and getting out and seeing Italia, the choice is quite obvious. I’ve never really gone out and traveled internationally on my own {I think the last time I did that, I ended up being stranded on the beaches of Normandy with essentially no money, but that’s a story for an entirely different post!}. So, not knowing too much about Italy but wanting to get out and about and see the sights {in a non-stranded kind of way}, I immediately signed up for a few tours that I hoped would show me the big sights. I wasn’t expecting much, but to my pleasant surprise, I met quite a few people an definitely had more fun than I was expecting.
Last weekend I traveled to Florence and Pisa on a USO overnight tour. For the price, it was an awesome experience to get out of the southern Italy region and go somewhere I had never been before. On the tour, I befriended a few other ladies on the tour traveling alone and we had a great time climbing to the top of the tower of Pisa and drinking lots of vino delicioso! Last night I went on a dinner/wine adventure and sat with three hilarious young women where we talked about wine, Italy, relationships and the Navy {always a good combination!} — it was a great night.
Today I ventured to Pompeii on my own though{sans tour} and while there weren’t nearly as many laughs, there’s something satisfying in having the ability and freedom to come and go and travel as you wish. It’s slightly empowering, especially in a foreign country. So my advice to those who contemplate the idea of venturing somewhere new alone, I say “TOTALLY go for it!”. But, if you’re still a bit hesitant, look into a group tour somewhere that you’ve always wanted to visit, because chances are high that you’ll make some new friends.
Happy traveling!

Keep traveling!
